I remember clear as day, November 3rd 2007.
I got to the mall at 9am, because that’s when I thought that Men’s Warehouse opened. On that day I didn’t expect anything to happen. It was the day of my buddy Richard’s wedding rehearsal.
I was picking up my tux.
As it turned out the Tux Shop in the mall didn’t open till 10am.
So I’m at the mall, I’ve got time to kill. And the question is what do I do?
I remember going to the food court for breakfast.
I sat there and ate for about 20 min. (Chicken Teriyaki Bowl for breakfast) I still had 40 min to kill.
As it turns out the only shop that was open was a Kay Jewelers. So I walk in. The sales women asks me if she can show me anything
I say no…
Then with about 30 min left to kill I thought, what the heck why don’t I look at some rings…
So I look at some rings and I think…I don’t have the money saved up, I’ve got nothing to buy this ring right now…
So I call my buddy Richard (who’s about to get married) and tell him my dilemma.
And he just said, “When will you ever have the money? Just go for it.”
So I finagled with this woman…I told her my financial dilemma.
She ended up knocking a few hundred bucks off to make me feel like I got a good deal.
And I bought it…
I put it on a credit card…I didn’t have a plan to propose…I didn’t have the money to pay it off. I just saw an opportunity and I jumped at it…
The first think my parents said was, “Wow that’s awesome…How are you going to pay for it?” I was poor!
I had not at all planned to propose at that time, so before the rehearsal dinner I had to pull Desiree’s dad aside and tell him what I was going to do and ask for his blessing.
I had to plan what the heck I was going to do…
And for about two days I had to not pee my pants with nervousness whenever I was around her.
Because asking someone to marry you is a big deal. It’s a risk to walk up to someone you’ve only known for a few years and ask, will you spend the rest of your life with me?
The potential reward was too great. I had to risk getting crushed. I had to risk putting my emotions out there.
Have you had a story like this?
These moments in your story that you need to make a move. You need to sink or swim. Moments that involve risk are defining.
They tell a lot about whom you are, what you are willing to do and whom you trust.
She said yes, and because I took the risk, I got a huge reward.
Sometimes I think that in life we all need a little jump-start every now and then. The things that do that are taking leaps of faith.
These leaps take you too a new level in life.
They re-define and re-write who you are, and they are probably the scariest things that you will ever do.Share
